The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association has awarded six $1,000 scholarships this year. Any Senior who has wrestled at a Minnesota High School and is college-bound was eligible to apply.
Here are this year’s scholarship winners:
Samuel Grove of Moorhead High School, the son of Mark and Kimberly Grove, is coached by Skip Toops. Samuel is a two-time wrestling state place winner and is also an outstanding football player and track athlete. Samuel is active in school life and was the American Legion Minnesota Boys State delegate from his school. Samuel has committed to wrestle at South Dakota State.
Bryce Kallenbach from Watertown – Mayer High School, placed 5th in the state in wrestling as a Junior. He is a member of The National Honor Society and the Student Council at Watertown – Mayer and has played football. Bryce is undecided on his future college plans. He is the son of Jason and Amy Bauer and Brian and Molly Heimerl and is coached by Joe Traen.
Wyatt Gillette is coached by Keith Hanson at St. Peter High School. Wyatt, an A student, participated in the State Tournament as a Junior and is a three-year soccer letter winner. He is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in Concert Choir. Wyatt is active as a volunteer in his community and his church. Wyatt’s parents are Kelli and Bill Miller and Don and Meghan Gillette. He plans on attending either St. John’s University or Gustavus Adolphus College.
John Altendorf from Goodhue High School is coached by Josh Grant and intends to enroll at Drake University. John is very active in his school. In addition to being a state wrestling participant, John plays baseball, is in choir and band, a National Honor Society member, was a recipient of the EXCEL award and is the student representative on the School Board. John is an A student and is also a leader in the local 4-H club and his church. John’s parents are Pam and Kevin Altendorf.
Bailee O’Reilly is the second scholarship winner from Goodhue High School, and he is the son of Zach and Dorothy O’Reilly and the late Jamie O’Reilly. Bailee is the defending Class A 152 lb State Champion. Bailee is very active in school. He is a three-year football letter winner, a five-year Choir participant and has been a class officer twice. Bailee is an active member of his 4-H club. He is undecided about his college plans but hopes to wrestle at a Division 1 or Division 2 school.
Wade Sullivan from Lakeville North High School is planning on attending The University of Minnesota Duluth. Wade is a two-time wrestling state placer. He is also an outstanding track athlete. He is a three-time letter winner in football, and as a senior was honored as an All-State player, and was named the 2016 Minnesota Gatorade player of the year. Wade, an outstanding student, is the son of Matt and Dana Sullivan and is coached by Dan Recchio.
