Augustana finishes eighth at regionals with three Vikings earning spots at nationals

MANKATO, Minn. – The Augustana College wrestling team continued competition at the NCAA Super Regional Three finishing eighth as a team with three Vikings advancing to the NCAA Championships. Augustana racked up 57 team points while Maryville earned the regional title with 114 team points and St. Cloud State took second scoring 109 team points.

TJ North was Augustana’s highest finisher at the Super Region Three tournament, notching a first-place finish at 125 pounds. Jayd Docken will make his fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing third at 197 pounds. Making his first appearance for nationals, Michael Lowman qualified for the NCAA Championships with a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds.

North battled his way to the championship match against Minnesota State’s Da’Wayne Robertson after winning a 7-4 decision over Tim Prescott of St. Cloud State to start day two off. North and Robertson battled in the championship match coming to a halt with a score of 1-1 to force overtime. North recorded a takedown with 20 seconds left to take the 125-pound title by a 3-1 victory and earned his second consecutive NCAA Super Region Three Championship title, and a ticket for nationals.

At 197, Docken entered semifinals against second-ranked Julian Smith of McKendree battling to the last seconds where Docken lost a close match by a 3-2 decision. Docken turned around and pinned Dylan Windfield of Upper Iowa in 5:38 to automatic earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.Docken battled against Joe Gomes of Northern State for the third time this season taking the third-place match by a 3-2 decision.

Lowman will head to nationals in St. Louis, Mo. after defeating Blake Andrews of Ouachita Baptist by a 6-1 decision and dominating for a second time this season Malcolm Allen of Minnesota State by a decision of 3-2. Lowman finished fourth in the heavyweight division losing to Logan Hopp of Upper Iowa by a 3-2 decision in the third-place bout.

Aero Amo picked up sixth-place finish for Augustana.

The NCAA Championships will take place March 13-14 in St. Louis, Mo.
